Part of the Bromeliad family the pineapple plant produces a single ornamental fruit on a single sturdy stalk at the centre of a crown of green foliage. The fruits that are edible but extremely bitter – these are best grown for their good looks and novelty value.

With the right conditions the pineapple plant is easy to care for.
Light: Lots of bright light so a warm sunny windowsill or conservatory is ideal.
Water: Pineapples nee a dry period in between watering so allow the plant to dry out completely in between each watering. Barely water during the winter months
Temperature: average to warm household temperatures
Feed: use a liquid fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season
To propagate: You can grow a new pineapple from the fruit itself – just cut off the spiky top, remove the lower leaves to reveal a stem, and allow this to dry out for a day or so. Then place it in a pot of compost and water in well.
